Album Review – Muse: Impressionist French and Spanish music / Jack Hancher

Rich restorative music-making off the beaten track from guitarist Jack Hancher.

This elegant selection of French and Spanish impressionist music, much of it arranged by guitarist Jack Hancher, holds a reflective tone without veering into mawkish sentimentality or nauseating self-absorption. Harmonic progressions ooze the Belle Époque, whilst the playing combines both maturity and an energetic sense of modernity.

The album’s meta-narrative is found in the order in which the tracks are placed. A renaissance vibe is found in its expanded heart, after which the simplicity of Satie’s Gymnopédie No. 1 tugs at the heartstrings and gently squeezes the tear ducts. This is the second album by Jack Hancher, the 2022 Royal Overseas League Gold Medal winner. Rich, restorative music-making off the beaten track.
