There’s an intriguing sense of dislocation when Nicky Spence walks on stage: his spoken voice sets up an expectation, the sung voice completely subverts it. Two entirely different propositions. The voice is green — not inexperience, but more the idea of freshly cut grass: vibrant and fulsome, imposing itself before you’d realised the lawn even needed mowing. A tenor who doesn’t announce, doesn’t insist. A firm, rhapsodic voice when called for. At other times adept at the swift transition, especially if it entails a cheeky extreme dynamic contrast followed by a hefty crescendo at the end of a breath.
What’s most striking is the warmth — an enthusiasm and empathy that radiates outward, always toward the audience rather than inward toward the performance. If there’s an interruption to the flow, he’ll happily reach for the microphone to reassure the audience. He’s thinking of us, not himself. He reaches, always reaches, and does so without calculation. That commitment is the voice’s most distinctive quality, and perhaps its most honest one.
