The NYO has appointed Alpesh Chauhan as its Principal Conductor and Music Advisor. The fixed role for a conductor is a first for the ensemble.

Conductor Alpesh Chauhan OBE has been appointed Principal Conductor and Music Advisor to the National Youth Orchestra.
Chauhan last worked with NYO on the group’s To the Beat tour last Spring, conducting Orchestra at Camden’s Roundhouse, Manchester’s Bridgewater Hall and Wigan Youth Zone.
Whilst no stranger to NYO, Chauhan’s appointment marks the first time in NYO’s history that the orchestra has appointed a Principal Conductor — a significant evolution for for the 77 year old ensemble long guided by guest conductors on a project-by-project basis. It’s a development which makes sense strategically, giving both recurring members and conductor the ability to shape programming and playing helping the orchestra establish a longer-tail distinctive voice.
The NYO’s summer tour saw the group perform at the BBC Proms earlier this year in an electrifying performance of Holst’s Planets.
